Sensory Holiday Card
Graphic Design

I designed a card for Method to send to clients, celebrating the festive season. The approach avoids reference to any religious affiliations, focusing instead on capturing the feeling of the winter season. As an experience design studio, I wanted the card to engage as many senses as possible.

The card features a haiku poem, a debossed tree bark texture and is scented with pine oil.

A multi-sensory approach

I wrote a haiku that aimed to sum up the feeling of warming in a forest during winter. I wanted to capture the feel of the forest in the card.

I design a tree bark texture to be debossed into the card, inviting the recipient to touch and interact.

An olfactory experience

I tested treating the card with various types of natural pine oil to ensure that the scent would remain long enough to reach the recipient by mail and also to avoid any staining of the paper. Hundreds of cards were treated and dried in our studio in advance of mailing them out to clients.

The final experience upon opening the envelope was a surprising aroma of pine combined with the texture and evocative language of the card.
