Barbican – The Future of Food
Speculative Design
In western society we’ve grown accustomed to treating food as a commodity. Our lifestyles are built around a reliance on abundant resources conveniently available at low prices. Yet some of the biggest issues we face globally – from depleting natural resources and climatic changes to rising rates of chronic illness – stem from how and what we eat. As the distance from seed to table widens, we feel ever more detached from where our food comes from and how it is produced.
The desire for a more sustainable, fair, and nutritious food system is starting to gain traction around us. As technology reinvents itself and societal norms evolve, we felt it was necessary to think about the kind of food future we want.
We created the Food Assembly, an immersive, interactive exhibition that allows visitors to experience communities from three radical food futures. The aim of the exhibition was to stimulate discussion, debate, and to consider what the future of food could and should be.

Lead Visual Designer
The team took the roles of ambassadors from the three food futures. Over the course of the 2 day exhibition we had conversations with hundreds of visitors, trying to convince them to vote for the future we each represented. Staying in character (visitors from the future) created lively discussions and debates with visitors, who each voted for one of the three societies and left ideas and feedback about the exhibition.
Each society was brought to life through artefacts which communicated key information about the future scenarios, as well as acting as provocations for discussions.
