Work

Over the past 19 years my work has addressed a host of problems for a diverse range of clients across many industries. Solving these problems has called for approaches which span a broad spectrum of design disciplines.

I share here a sample of projects organised by discipline with the intention of showcasing the breadth of my approach. More information about my background can be found in the About section of this site.

If you would like a more in-depth look at my work, please reach out to me, I’d be happy to meet and discuss it in person.

Strategic Design & Research

I am adept at running research projects, with many years of experience managing qualitative and quantitative research both domestically and internationally.

I have spent a lot of time on the road, travelling to meet users, interviewing and observing them in their home environments. I also have experience of constructing quantitative research from surveys to larger scale data analysis.

No matter the scope or subject matter of the research,
I always aim to take a vantage point above the information gathered, generating valuable insights from an impartial viewpoint of a curious observer. I believe the quality of research-led insights dictates the quality of the design output.

Experience Design

I passionately believe that Experience Design should encompass every single interaction or engagement a user may have with a company or organisation. This is, therefore, not a purely digital pursuit but should be considered holistically, incorporating every available medium. My broad range of design experience across many disciplines means I am able to bridge gaps between areas including interaction design, visual design, service design and environmental design. I see Experience Design as the culmination of these perspectives, with the user firmly in the centre of my thinking.

Speculative Design

Design has reached a level of maturity as a service and as a discipline. Its value beyond merely production and aesthetic is now acknowledged by the business world. In recent years I have found myself much more engaged in design as a means of future planning – mapping out potential scenarios for clients as a means of mitigating the risks associated with future business uncertainties. Speculative Design allows us to immerse ourselves in potential future scenarios informed by rigorous research, and generate design responses that may otherwise not have been considered.

Brand Design

I began my career working in a number of branding agencies and was fortunate enough to work on branding schemes for a range of large, international companies. This grounding in the rigour and ‘big picture’ systems mindset of branding has informed my approach to date. Visual Design remains one of the pillars upon which my design practice is built.

Environmental Design

I have worked for a number of interior/environmental design studios throughout my career. In an age where so many of our interactions are digital, I value my experience in designing physical environments. This has been of particular advantage when designing experiences within retail and hospitality sectors. I feel it’s vital to understand how the digital experiences we design fit within the physical contexts we inhabit. These things should not be designed in isolation.

Graphic Design

I studied Graphic Design at university, specialising in typography. While my work has evolved since my print design education, the combination of type and image in a structured hierarchy remains the core of my visual design practice.

Art Direction & Photography

I have a strong sense of aesthetics, composition and storytelling. I understand that a strong concept requires strong execution in order for it to be fully realised.

I also use photography to document my process, allowing clients to better understand the methodologies and outcomes of my projects.
