I designed this seasonal lighting installation for Method's 3 studios. The installation uses geometric icicle-like paper lanterns fitted with LED smart lightbulbs. The lights are activated when someone walks past the installation, triggering an ultrasonic sensor.
With three studios separated by thousands of miles, I felt the installation could bring people together during the festive period by replicating the installation in each office. The installations ran via a Raspberry Pi and were networked over a server. When employees walked past their own local installations, white lights were triggered. However, in each of the other studios, the icicles were lit a different colour. Through these different coloured lights, each studio could make their presence felt with their transatlantic colleagues.
Diagram of colour triggers in each studio:
London flashed green for SF and NY.
SF flashed blue for London and NY.
NY flashed red for SF and London.
Each studio flashed white for their own local employees.
The Raspberry Pi connected to an ultrasound sensor to trigger the lights from a user's proximity.
